Danny Goldberg, head of Nirvana’s management, later revealed that “[w]e couldn’t decide between ‘Come as You Are’ and ‘In Bloom.’ Kurt [Cobain] was nervous about ‘Come as You Are’ because it was too similar to a Killing Joke song…”
Maximo Park signing to Warp - seemed an odd proposition at the time, but maybe they knew something we didn’t. For starters it’s yielded a bizarre forthcoming LP of remixes, where the likes of Tom Middleton, Hijack and dubstep producer Martyn have turned ‘Let’s Get Clinical’ into a variety of bastard child dance tracks.
This mix, though, from Warp labelmate Clark is by far the most extreme.
Britons: here’s a petition to the Prime Minister to abolish the new Digital Economy bill’s provisions that will require ISPs to cut off your household’s internet access if anyone living there (or using your network) is accused of three acts of copyright infringement:
This petition has been set up in response to the Government’s proposal to cut off internet access to those who are caught illegally downloading copyrighted files. We think this has one fundamental flaw, as illegal filesharers will simply hack into other peoples WiFi networks to do their dirty work. This will result in innocent people being disconnected from the internet. What’s more, such a punishment should be dealt with in the proper way, in a court of law. This guilty until proven innocent approach violates basic human rights.

———————————- lex-bubbles, neonsigh, anyone else interested: here’s my mix tape of rockin’ tunes. the idea behind this was to put together songs that individually represent a certain point in my life. i actually have wee anecdotes behind each tune but if i told them we’d be here all day…so no. they range from my humble rock n roll beginnings in middle school to the present day, although, they’re in no particular order. i also tried to keep away from my common favourites in order to avoid giving you a Manics/Blur mix (if i keep staring at the list, i may change my mind and start over. so here, take it!). Dig! :D
For me, this probably just about nudges past the previously hyped Three Trapped Tigers effort in terms of my favourite EP of 2009. Allow me to explain. Epic45 have been making their own brand of post-rock turned dream pop from their sleepy Midlands village for over a decade. In this time the duo have developed and honed a certain style of electronica.
Even with the added synth, Epic45 still demonstrate their ability to write music so laid back it’s almost horizontal. I’m thinking along the lines of Kyte covering The Radio Dept. here. Sounds ace huh? Yet ‘In All The Empty Houses’ strays away from the sun tinged sounds of their earlier releases, opting for a more haunting effect and delivering it brilliantly.
Truth be told, I’ve been hunting for news like this for weeks now, scouring the Interwebs for new signs of life from Interpol—aside from Paul Banks’ slightly underwhelming pseudo solo album and Carlos D’s film career, of course. And just when the most that I could hope for was a speculative “?” post (Arcade Fire one was a hit, right?), drummer Sam Fogarino dropped the “new record” bomb on Paste (via CoS). Boom:
“The new record falls back towards the first,” Fogarino told Justin Jacobs. “In trying to move forward, there was an unspoken realization that you can’t let go of your sonic-defining tag.”
The good news: Interpol’s upcoming 4th LP is due out in early 2010 and it’s a throwback to their breakthrough Turn On the Bright Lights. There is one unsettling new bit about Courtney Love showing up in the studio, but no worries! She simply yelled, “And he was a fucking shrimp farmer!” and walked out. No credit cards were exchanged or anything.
